Hello Bloggers,
I know another blog so soon after the last one. 'What's going on' do you ask? Well something happened today that kind of shocked me and well it seemed important to write about. I'm not usually one to hit the hard topics but this is something I find horrible.
I guess I had better explain the title of this blog. Australian's have developed the stereotype of being Dumb, Drunk and Racist. There was even a documentary about it recently on the ABC. Up until today I never really understood. Like all stereotypes there is always the small minority that lives up to the reputations. But I've always said don't judge a race by what a small portion of that group does.
Today however I was left stunned at work by what a child said to me.
I work in a retail store that offers an hour free child care while you shop. I sign in and out the children and as part of that process have to get a few details about the child before they come in. One question is do they have any allergies? I asked a mother that today and she answered no they're all fine and continued to fill out the child's form. The child however thinking it would be a hilarious joke and obviously learning it from her parent said
Child: The only allergy I have is to Mosques and Catholics.
Mother (laughing): Don't be silly. Anyway I doubt you will find any Mosques or Catholics in there.
END SCENE
I myself am a Catholic and in my upbringing was taught to respect everybody and their beliefs. In high school (which was catholic) we were taken on an excursion to all the different houses of religion to understand and respect what they teach. And I know I probably lost a few people a paragraph back when I said I was Catholic and this isn't any conversion blog. I know my church and religion has its problems just like everything in this world. But to teach your child to be "allergic" to them is wrong. Its going backwards into the past. In the last 100 years so much has been accomplished and its people teaching their children hate that sets everything back. To see the good in people and to judge people by what they do and how they act should be how your children are brought up.
If an elderly person fell over in a shopping centre and a man runs up to help. Would you ask if he was Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, bud-hist, Jewish or house of the Jedi before you passed judgement on whether he was a kind man? No. You would think, "that's a kind man". Religion and Race has nothing to do with whether you are a good person or not. It is your actions and also reactions that show what kind of person you truly are.
Sorry if it all got a bit heavy there. This is something I feel strongly about and felt the need to express my thoughts on the matter. Until next time.
Olivia
PS. By the way. Happy St Valentines Day.
